How Do We Control the Tongue (James 3)?

Let my tongue, like the pen of a skilled writer, create beautiful words (speech) like a beautiful masterpiece of writing, something that builds up and edifies, rather than destroys and tears down. I will use my words constructively. Can the same thing be said in a different way, a better way so that I can still get my point across without causing irreparable damage to my relationships, or to others?

Let our tongue obey the words of the Lord, of His wisdom. Think about His word first. Let us keep God’s Word in our hearts that we might not sin against Him with our tongue. Let His Word fill our hearts and be the filter or guard for our mouth, for out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34).

And let’s not speak negative things over our lives or over our situations/circumstances (Deuteronomy 30:19; Proverbs 18:21).

Galatians 5:24-25 says, “Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, we must also follow the Spirit. We must not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” So, let us build up rather than provoke, and yield our members as members of righteousness, rather than unrighteousness. Be mindful that our tongue is a member.

Romans 6:11-13 says, “So you too must count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires. Do not present the parts of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and present the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.”

Touring In Paris Is Just As We Dreamed It Would Be – Amazing, Beautiful and Special!

Preaching the resurrection is the thing we do every Sunday more or less, is it not? The entire Christian life is a direct result of the resurrection of Christ. All of our work as pastors focuses on teaching people to live in the resurrection reality. All grief management, discipleship encouragement, judgment warning and instruction in righteousness grows directly from the fact that Jesus Christ has inaugurated the New Age in the midst of the Old Age.

When Jesus of Nazareth rode into Jerusalem on that donkey colt at Passover in AD 30, he was presenting Himself as the Messiah, the center of reality, God in the flesh. The people wanted to believe He was their idea of Messiah, but He isn’t. He was purposely letting them think what they wanted to think, to interpret Him as they wished, according to their idea of Messiah. In a way, He was letting them think one thing about him when in fact there was a deeper and more profound reality. Only after the resurrection and only to a relative minority of the population (though a large group over a few weeks of time) did he reveal the Truth. But once that Truth was revealed it changed the view of everybody about everything.
Preaching the resurrection is preaching the gospel. It is the most stunning, astounding, life-transforming reality imaginable.

Just a Thought,

Pastor Rick
